Sexual Abuse Protocol

The Diocese of Hamilton has a Sexual Abuse Protocol Committee to investigate complaints of sexual misconduct or abuse by clergy or religious. The Protocol Committee is guided by the principles and procedures of a national Protocol on Sexual Abuse, Te- Houhanga Rongo – a Path to Healing. Members of the Protocol committee are appointed by the bishop of the diocese. They come from a cross section of men and women, clergy and lay. All have experience or expertise to contribute to the process.

The role of the Protocol Committee is pastoral. Recommendations are made to the bishop of the diocese in regard to the pastoral care of both the complainant and the accused. It does not act in any way that is prejudicial to legal proceedings.

Copies of a pamphlet are available, explaining the role and procedures of the Protocol Committee.

Members of the Committee can all be contacted by phone further information. Copies of the national Protocol, Te Houhanga Rongo-A Path to Healing, are available from the Committee.
